Incidence of thrombophlebitis is reported to be related to the design and type of cannula used. A study undertaken to compare the incidence of thrombophlebitis when Teflon and Vialon cannulae were used showed a significant decrease in incidence and severity with Vialon cannulae.
Infusion phlebitis is a common complication of intravenous (IV) therapy, and results in pain for the patient and increased difficulty in obtaining venous access. Peters et al (1984) related the incidence of phlebitis to the design of the infusion device, while Gaukroger (1988) and McKee (1989) reported that incidence of thrombophlebitis fell when the Vialon cannula was used. A prospective local trial was thus undertaken to compare incidence of thrombophlebitis when Vialon and Teflon cannulae were used.
